The Light of Hope School is an on-campus facility designed to provide quality education to about 200 underprivileged children whose parents are working as support staff at Forman Christian College (A Chartered University) and who live in the surrounding area. The school opened on September 1, 2015 in a custom-built facility, and offered classes from Kindergarten to fifth grade using the Oxford curriculum.
The initial funding for the ground floor of the school building was provided through the generous donations of many American individuals, families, churches, and other organizations. Efforts were spearheaded to raise more funds in the USA for the completion of the rest of the school. The efforts of Rector Dr James A Tebbe bore fruit, and this summer we finished the school building by adding the first and second floors. This has given us a total of 16 classrooms, 2 science labs, 1 digital/computer lab, 1 reading room, 1 staff room, and 2 offices. We will grow one grade a year, and in 2021 our first batch of 10th graders should be ready to sit for their Matric exams.
We provide clean, filtered drinking water in the water fountains on the school premises. There is also a washroom block with separate facilities for boys and girls, with each facility having a same gender cleaner responsible for maintaining a clean and odorless environment. There is also a store room for storage of school supplies. There is sufficient ground space for students to run around and expend their energies outside the classroom. The daily break times are staggered to not overcrowd the available physical space.
The outside periphery of the school campus has high walls with concertina wire all along the perimeter. An observation post is stationed at the top of the store with a guard on duty 24/7.
We want our students to have as close an experience as is possible of quality education at a mere fraction of the actual cost. The parents pay between Rs 200 to Rs 500 per child per month depending on how many children are in school.
We are constantly on the lookout for other donors to help us make our program one of excellence and with current trends in mind. Technology, teaching-learning aides and materials, air-conditioning and uninterrupted electricity are some of our priorities.
Providing our students with a set of uniform items, textbooks and other stationery so as to help them learn in a tension-free environment is also being considered strongly. Leaving school for home after a healthy lunch can also be considered, as many of these children are deprived of these basic needs at home.
