The Career Service Office in collaboration with Department of Mass Communication organized a meet-up titled ‘Media and Academia: Building Connections’ on Thursday 15 June 2017. The purpose was to get enlightenment from the journalists about their expectations from the FCCU media graduates. The event started with the recitation of the Holy Quran and reading from the Holy Bible. Manager Internships, Ms Sara Chughtai was the compère and mediator for the evening. She invited Mr Ameek George, Head of Career Service Office to welcome the guests. He emphasized on the gaps existing between academia and shared ideas on how to fill them. The faculty, editorial production and journalists along with their HR teams collected under one roof to address these issues.
Ms Rachel Hasan, Chairperson of the Mass Communication Department took the podium and enlightened the guests of her year-long endeavor to get the media and academia on the same platform. While introducing the Department, she explained the range of courses and specializations it offers along with internship and research opportunities; then she opened the floor for discussion by the media professionals.
The media personnel highlighted the areas where the students are lacking. Foremost, they stressed on the habit of newspaper reading as print news is vetted and verified before being published as well as knowledge of media organizations. Suggestions were also made to give more practical work to students and sending them out in the field for their assignments.
One journalist quite aptly stated that, ‘journalism is not a job; it is a passion, a lifestyle’. The suggestions and feedback given were much appreciated by the organizers of the event. It was a healthy and interactive session. The media professionals termed it as a bold step by the Department of Mass Communication to invite the media and connect with academia. Ms Rachel committed that the department will try its best to incorporate all the suggestions proposed by the esteemed journalists. The event was followed by Iftar and dinner.
