On Friday 12 May 2017, the Advancement Office arranged the FCCU Zakat Launch. Dr Hamid Saeed, Professor Emeritus and Registrar Meritorious, hosted the ceremony. Dr Hamid shared with the audience the history of the Zakat Fund and its importance for the students.
The FCCU Zakat Fund (Certified) was established in 2013 so that the dreams of hardworking students can be realized who otherwise cannot afford to get higher education from a recognized university. Dr Hamid further assured that FCCU handles the Zakat fund with complete transparency. Only the most deserving Muslim students are shortlisted. The Zakat Committee comprises of an Advancement Staff member, and two members of the Alumni Board. The Financial Aid department scrutinizes the applications of students from needy backgrounds before sharing them with the committee. These students are further interviewed by the Zakat Committee panel and are helped according to their need. Through the Zakat Fund 40 Muslim students received scholarship amount of Rs 2.6 million in 2015-16, while in 2016-17, 68 Muslim students have been given support through an amount of Rs 3.8 million that has allowed them to continue education at FCCU.
Also present at the occasion, Professor of History, Dr Arfa Sayeda Zehra talked about the importance of education and the impact it would have in the development of this nation. The Chief Guest of this launch event was Mr Abdul Wahid Qureshi who is the CFO Berger Paints and the CEO of its venture 3S Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Dr Hamid thanked Mr Qureshi and Berger Paints for helping FCCU in the promotion of our Zakat Campaign. Rector FCCU, Dr James A Tebbe also addressed the audience and talked about the impact that giving for education has had over the years.
In the end, Formanite Mian Afzal Hayat (the former MPA and Chief Minister of Punjab, and active member of the Alumni Board) thanked the alumni present for their interest and commitment to Forman Christian College and its endeavors.
