Seating Plan: Advanced Writing Skills (ENGL 103) Special Exam

Department of English in collaboration with Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) is conducting a special exam (additional exam) for all registered students in Advanced Writing Skills (ENGL 103) in Spring 2017. It is a required test for all students enrolled in ENGL 103 and students not appearing for this exam will be fined Rs 500.

NOTE: This is an additional exam and is NOT a part of ENGL 103 Final Exam.

The exam will be held on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 May 2017. The Seating Plan of the exam will be published before 30 April 2017 on FCCU’s website. The Seating Plan will include Student ID, Day/Date, Time and Venue of the Exam. Students must check their assigned venue (computer lab) to come to take the test whether on Friday 12 or Saturday 13 2017. There is no shifting between days and the exam will take about (two and half hours) 2 ½ hours to complete.

Some of the outcomes from the special exam are as follows:

  • Privilege to clear Written English Competency Exam if the Written English Competency Exam is not already cleared by student.
  • Provide opportunity to students to know their level of improvement after studying Basic Writing Skills (ENGL 101) and Advance Writing Skills (ENGL 103) courses
  • Impact of teaching Basic and Advance Writing Skills as general education courses to students (either English skills have improved or has the same level) after the intervention of ENGL 101 and ENGL 103 courses
  • Instructors and Department will be able to know, how well students have progressed from the time of admission till the last week of their ENGL 103 course
  • Helpful in reducing the backlog of students for Written English Competency Exam. This also helps the department to increase their graduation rate.

There will be four (4) ACCUPLACER components of the test:

ESL Language Use Test:

The ESL Language Use test measures student’s proficiency in using correct grammar in English sentences. There are five content areas measured on this test:

  • Nouns, Pronouns, Pronoun Case Structure
  • Sentence Structures
  • Subject–Verb Agreement
  • Adverbs, Adjectives, Verbs
  • Subordination/Coordination

ESL Reading Skills MCQs:

The ESL Reading Skills test measures your ability to read English. Specifically, it assesses your comprehension of short passages. It contains brief passages of 50 words or less and moderate length passages of 50 to 90 words. Half of this testcontains straightforward comprehension items (paraphrase, locating information, vocabulary on a phrase level, and pronoun reference). The other half assesses inference skills (main idea, fact versus opinion, cause/effect logic, identifying irrelevant information, author’s point of view and applying the author’s logic to another situation).

 Sentence Skills Test, Non-ESL:

The Sentence Skills Non-ESL test measures student understands of sentence structure, i.e. how sentences are put together and what makes a sentence complete and clear. There are three content areas measured on this test:

  • Recognizing Complete Sentences
  • Coordination and Subordination
  • Clear Sentence Logic

WritePlacer Essay:
You will write a multiple-paragraph writing sample of about 300–600 words on an assigned topic. You will have one hour to plan, write, review and edit what you have written. Read the assignment carefully before you begin to write. Be sure to defend your position with logical arguments and appropriate examples. Your essay must be 300–600 words in length.
